The Law Firm Performance Diagnostic™
A structured 45-60 minute diagnostic conversation, followed by a written Performance Gap Recap delivered to your firm within 3 business days.
Regardless of whether we end up working together.
Not a vendor presentation. Not a sales call. An actual performance diagnostic. Conducted by a former trial attorney and Certified Performance Neuroscience Coach who has sat where your associates sit.
You’ve seen the numbers. You know what turnover and impaired performance cost a firm your size every year. The question that follows isn’t whether the cost is real. It’s why standard wellness programs aren’t moving it.
The reason is not a lack of not effort. It’s methodology. Most initiatives address the psychological experience of burnout without touching its neurobiological root cause. When the root cause goes unaddressed, the problem compounds, and it doesn’t stay internal. It shows up in client responsiveness, communication quality, the depth of strategic thinking, and in what happens to client relationships when a burned-out associate finally throws in the towel and leaves the firm.
The Law Firm Performance Diagnostic™ is where that gets diagnosed. It’s an honest, structured evaluation of what is actually driving the performance and retention challenges in your firm.
HOW THIS WORKS
Four Steps. A Written Deliverable. Value Regardless of Next Steps.
01 Complete the Pre-Call Intake
~12–15 minutes
You’ll receive the Pre-Call Intake Questionnaire immediately after booking. It covers your firm’s retention patterns, burnout indicators, productivity concerns, and client experience signals. Candid responses — not polished ones — let Rick arrive prepared to focus on what matters most.
02 The Diagnostic Conversation
45–60 minutes
A structured conversation across four performance domains — Rick asking focused questions and then listening. This is not a presentation of STA’s programs. It’s a genuine diagnostic that surfaces the patterns beneath what you’re experiencing.
03 The Performance Gap Recap
delivered within 48–72 hours
Within 48 to 72 hours, Rick delivers a written Performance Gap Recap. This is a focused 2–3 page document that identifies the core challenges, names the likely root causes, maps the business and client-service consequences if left unaddressed, and outlines a practical path forward. Useful to your firm whether or not we work together.
04 The Recommendation Call
30–45 minutes
A follow-up conversation to walk through the Recap together. Rick shares his full recommendations, including what to prioritize first, what an engagement could accomplish, and what the firm could begin acting on immediately on its own. If an STA engagement isn’t the right fit, he’ll tell you directly.
WHAT THE DIAGNOSTIC COVERS
A structured conversation across four performance domains with Rick asking the focused questions and doing most of the listening. This is not a presentation of
STA’s programs. It is a genuine diagnostic, surfacing the patterns beneath the surface of what you’re experiencing.
Four Domains.
One Common Root Cause.
Across firm after firm, Rick sees four challenges show up together and connected. The diagnostic examines all four in your firm’s specific context.
Retention & Talent
Where are associates leaving, at what point in their tenure, and at what cost? What are the actual drivers behind departures, not the exit-interview version, but the real pattern? And what are the equity partners’ honest assessment of what walks out the door with each one?
Burnout & Attorney Wellbeing
What’s being observed on the ground? What are the behavioral signals, the early indicators, and the chronic patterns? What has been tried, and why hasn’t it worked? If the current trajectory continues for two to three more years, what does that mean for the firm?
Productivity & Performance
What’s the gap between your attorneys’ potential and their actual billable output? Where are the performance drains most visible: focus, judgment, emotional regulation, sustained output? What is that gap costing the firm?
Client Experience & Service Delivery
This is where the internal performance problems stop being an HR conversation and become a client-service and business-risk conversation. Chronically overloaded, disengaged attorneys don’t just underperform internally. They also underperform in client-facing situations: slower response times, communication gaps, reduced strategic depth, and disruption when a key associate leaves. The diagnostic examines whether your internal challenges are showing up in how clients are served and in the downstream risks to satisfaction, retention, and reputation.
What You Receive — Regardless of Next Steps.
Within 48 to 72 hours of the diagnostic conversation, Rick delivers a written Performance Gap Recap. It is not a brochure. It is not a proposal. It is a focused diagnostic document, built on what he heard, that does four specific things:
→ Identifies the top 3–5 challenges operating beneath the surface of what you described
→ Names the likely root causes, not the symptoms, the system producing them
→ Maps the business, human, and client-service consequences if they go unaddressed
→ Outlines a practical path forward, including steps the firm could begin taking on its own immediately
That document is useful to your firm, whether or not we end up working together. That’s not a sales line. It’s how a former trial attorney conducts a diagnostic.

The Person Leading This Conversation Has Sat Where Your Associates Sit.
Rick Petry, JD, spent 17 years as a trial attorney in large and mid-size firms and in his own practice. He has billed the hours, managed the client relationships, worked through the Sunday dread, and experienced firsthand the biological cost of practicing law at a high level without the tools to sustain it.
He has also lost dear friends and colleagues to this profession.
That’s what makes the questions he asks different from what a management consultant or generic executive coach would ask. He isn’t diagnosing from the outside. He has lived in the environment he’s evaluating: the culture, the client pressure, the billing structure, the partnership dynamics, and the specific neurobiological toll of practicing law at a high level without a performance architecture to support it.
The Legal Peak Performance Neuroscience™ framework he applies integrates autonomic nervous system regulation, flow state research, cognitive reappraisal science, and behavioral change science, translated specifically for attorneys. Every engagement begins with understanding your firm’s situation. That’s what the Diagnostic is designed to surface.

IF THERE IS A FIT
If the Recap and Recommendation Call point toward an engagement, there are three formats: The Introduction, The Half-Day Intensive, and The Firm Performance Partnership. The right fit depends on your firm’s situation, and the Recommendation Call is where that’s decided. You can review all three on the workshops page.
