A Former Trial Attorney Speaking to Lawyers
Not a wellness coach. Not a motivational speaker.
A lawyer who figured out a better way and built a science-based system to share it.
I started my legal career at a large firm with the mindset of a gladiator. No one would outwork me. No one would out-prepare me. And no one would care more deeply about their clients than I did.
For seventeen years, that commitment drove everything. It took me to favorable verdicts and other positive outcomes for my clients inside and outside the courtroom. It also nearly destroyed me.
There is a concept in neuroscience and psychophysiology called overcare. It is what happens when your dedication to your clients’ outcomes overrides your nervous system’s ability to regulate. The cases you’re working on never leave your thoughts. The 11:00 pm email is always answered. The Sunday dread starts Saturday afternoon. The anxiety before the trial never fully resolves after the verdict. And through all of it, you maintain the appearance of someone who has it completely together, because the profession demands it, and because the alternative feels career-ending.
I know this because I lived it. I burned out. I crashed.
And I lost two dear friends and a colleague to this profession. These were lawyers who were among the most brilliant legal minds I have ever encountered. People who gave everything they had to the law and to their clients. People who cared so deeply that it cost them everything. Their loss was not a personal failure. It was the predictable outcome of a profession running on a performance model that is biologically unsustainable, and that has never stopped to ask why.
That question became my mission.
I went looking for a better way. Not a way out of law — I loved the law — but a way to help others practice at the highest level without it costing everything else. What I found was thirty years of peer-reviewed performance science that elite athletes, military special forces operators, and Fortune 500 executives had been applying for decades. Because lawyers are so busy handling their cases, this science has been largely excluded from application in the legal profession.
The reason is simple: almost no one has translated that science into the specific demands, pressures, culture, and neurobiology of legal practice. Many coaches who existed had never practiced law. The wellness programs being offered were mindfulness-adjacent at best. Very little was built from within the experience, because very few with that experience had gone looking for the science.
That gap is what Legal Peak Performance Neuroscience™ was built to close.
At Straight Talk for Attorneys, we recognize legal professionals’ unique challenges in today’s dynamic and demanding legal environment. Our mission is to support attorneys by providing a suite of specialized services specifically tailored to the legal community, focusing on attorney peak performance, well-being, and leadership development.

When it comes to getting the best out of a person, Professor Petry is second to none. He sees potential in you that you may not see in yourself and he motivates you until you to unlock it. However, he doesn’t stop there, it is a constant cycle of motivation and sharpening the new skills you discover. When I met him, I had just concluded my football career. Although I was a bit rough around the edges, he reminded me of the power I possessed to make a great lawyer someday. That was in 2017 and by 2023, I became a mergers and acquisitions lawyer working at one of the most prestigious Fortune 500 companies in the world. Now, I serve as a lawyer for an NFL team, and Professor Petry is still in my corner.
